About Coquí
Coquí is a free Puerto Rican soundscape mixer. Blend the night song of the coquí frog with tropical rain, ocean waves, mountain streams, and trade winds into your own ambient mix for sleep, focus, or a quiet moment of añoranza for La Isla del Encanto. From the rainforest of El Yunque to the surf town of Rincón, it's a little piece of Puerto Rico you can carry anywhere.
What is Coquí?
Coquí is a free browser-based ambient sound mixer built around the natural sounds of Puerto Rico. Layer eight nature sounds at any volume, choose a ready-made scene, and set a sleep timer to drift off gently. It runs entirely in your browser, works offline once loaded, and is free to use forever.
The sounds of the island
The mix is built from sounds you'd hear across Puerto Rico: the unmistakable two-note call of the coquí, the tiny tree frog that is the island's beloved unofficial mascot, alongside warm tropical rain, rolling ocean waves, a mountain stream, the trade winds, nighttime crickets, and the call of the pitirre. Together they evoke an evening in El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, and the laid-back coast of Rincón, Puerto Rico.
Where the sounds come from
Every field recording in Coquí is released under CC0 (public domain), meaning it is free for anyone to use. The original synthesized textures and the design are original work by the creator.
How to use it
Tap any sound to wake it, then slide to set its volume in the mix. Tap a scene like El Yunque night or Beach at dusk to load a ready-made blend and adjust from there. Set a sleep timer to fade everything out gently after 15, 30, or 60 minutes. On your phone, add Coquí to your home screen and it opens full-screen like a native app.
White noise for focus and productivity
Coquí works as a free white noise app for work and study. Ambient nature sounds mask distracting background noise, helping you enter a state of focus without the mental overhead of silence or music with lyrics. Research consistently shows that steady ambient sound at a moderate volume improves concentration, reduces perceived stress, and supports sustained attention during deep work.
Tropical rain and flowing water are particularly effective as white noise for studying because they produce broadband sound that covers a wide range of frequencies, similar to a traditional white noise machine. The Coquí mixer lets you dial in exactly the right balance: heavier rain to block out a noisy office, softer stream sounds for a quieter space, or a mix of both layered with the coquí for a sound that is as calming as it is distinctive.
Coquí also works as white noise for sleeping and white noise for meditation. The steady rhythm of tropical rain, ocean waves, or a mountain stream gives your mind something neutral to rest on, easing the transition into sleep or a meditative state. The built-in sleep timer fades everything out gently after 15, 30, or 60 minutes, so you never have to reach for your phone once you have settled in.
